Give Thanks to the Lord, for He Is Good — A Thanksgiving Reflection

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1

Another Thanksgiving Day is here again! For many, this is a time for food, laughter, and family gatherings. Tables will be filled with turkey, mashed potatoes, and pies—and hearts will be full of joy and conversation. But for some, this season can feel lonely—the homeless, those living far from loved ones, or anyone going through quiet struggles that others cannot see. While the world celebrates abundance, some hearts are breaking, and others are just grateful to make it through another day.

So, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s pause to ask ourselves: What am I truly thankful for today? Is it the feast on the table? The company of family? Or the faithfulness of God that carries us through every season?

The True Meaning of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving isn’t just about the turkey in the oven or the decorations on the table—it’s about the gratitude in our hearts. The Bible reminds us:

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”

  • Philippians 4:6: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

  • Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

We may not all have the same abundance, but we all have something to thank God for—the breath in our lungs, the warmth of home, the love of family, or simply His unchanging mercy.

Don’t compare your kitchen with someone else’s. You might not have a grand table spread, but if you have peace, food to eat, and life in your body—you have reasons to praise! Others have nothing to eat. Others spend the day in tears or alone. Others are on the streets hoping for kindness. If you have a roof over your head, food on your table, and peace of mind—you are blessed. Today, join the Psalmist and lift up your voice:

“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” — Psalm 9:1-2

A Psalm for Thanksgiving — Psalm 107 (Reflection)

The Psalmist paints a vivid picture of God’s mercy and faithfulness in Psalm 107—a powerful reminder of how God rescues, restores, and renews His people:

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeemed from the hand of the foe...”

Through every trial—hunger, storms, captivity, sickness—when God’s people cried out, He heard them and delivered them. He led them to a place of peace. He broke their chains. He calmed the storms. He turned deserts into springs of water.

Let us be like those who are wise, who “heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.” (Psalm 107:43)

Be Happy. Be Grateful. Be Content.

So, as you celebrate Thanksgiving—whether your table is full or simple—remember this truth:

Gratitude is not about what’s on the table, but who’s in your heart. Let every breath, every smile, and every moment today be a song of thanksgiving to our good God.

“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 15:57

Happy Thanksgiving Day! Be happy. Be grateful. Be content.
